Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsuisou - 109: Shami Finally Turns Up

Heroes have a reputation for turning up late, but I never thought I’d be introducing a character this late.

シャミセン Shamisen: Meow?
So this is where Shamisen finally makes his entrance. In the old world he was our family cat, in the world Nagato made he also seemed to be... Huh? What’s he doing here then?
シャミセン Shamisen: Meow~
His fur is neater than it was in his days as a stray, he looks just as he did at my house... Ah, stop that, don’t lick my face. It’ll get all sticky like that.

Considering how domesticated he is, that means he’s probably already living at our place in this world too.
Anyway to introduce him, while the SOS Brigade filmed its movie in the old world we came across an incredibly rare male calico cat, Haruhi was responsible for his weird name.
And thanks to Haruhi’s annoying powers, he once gained the ability of human speech, but once the film was completed he returned to being an ordinary cat...
キョン Kyon: Wait a sec. What on earth are you doing in a place like this?
シャミセン Shamisen: Meow?
キョン Kyon: Ah no, sorry. You shouldn’t talk here. Did you spend the night at school perhaps?
シャミセン Shamisen: Meow.
キョン Kyon: I don’t speak “meow”, haha.
... Well in this world, he seems to just be an ordinary cat, so he doesn’t stick out.

And so, among all the students on their way to school I spied a pair who had laid their eyes on me.

It’s Asahina-san and Tsuruya-san. And not only had our eyes met, but they were coming this way.
鶴屋さん Tsuruya-san: Ah, sorry to bother ya. We just noticed that you seem to get along with that cat pretty well, it looked fun so we decided to come take a look.
キョン Kyon: Ah, no, I don’t mind.
Judging from her way of speaking, it appears we’re complete strangers again...

鶴屋さん Tsuruya-san: Mikuru’s way jealous, y’know. Ain’t that right, Mikuru?

みくる Mikuru: Eh? Ah, y-yes... Um, is it your own cat?
キョン Kyon: Yeah, sorta...

鶴屋さん Tsuruya-san: Oh my, you nervous boy? Could it be you’re a member of the Mikuru Fan Club?
I’d describe myself more as cautious than nervous. But I’ll play it safe with my response.
キョン Kyon: Yeah, something like that.

鶴屋さん Tsuruya-san: You’re in luck then, do yer best today!

みくる Mikuru: Y-you don’t mean...
鶴屋さん Tsuruya-san: Oh hey, Mikuru, five minutes until gathering time! We better hurry! Which means farewell for now, boy!

みくる Mikuru: Excuse us.

Tsuruya-san gave an energetic wave and Asahina-san quietly lowered her head as they went towards the entrance. They were very much the same as always.
That’s a good omen to start with. This time I might get the chance to interact with those two some more.

シャミセン Shamisen: Meow~
キョン Kyon: Oh, you think so too, Shamisen?

シャミセン Shamisen: Meow!
キョン Kyon: ... You don’t understand I word I’m saying... do you?

After that, I figured that taking Shamisen to school with me probably isn’t the best idea and decided to leave him in the custody of the school janitor until I went home.
