Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsuisou - 256: It's Better to Regret Something You Did (Revisited)
So, this week's episode of Yuki-chan covered the last few pages of chapter 10 and the entirety of chapters 11 and 12. The very opening bit was filler up until Mikuru and Tsuruya arrive (in the manga, Mikuru was already there due to being kidnapped by Haruhi as seen in last episode and Tsuruya arrived to take her back), this episode also features the debut of Taniguchi and Kunikida, which is also complete filler as neither of them appear in the manga until chapter 43. (Or well, Taniguchi may have had a one panel cameo earlier than that...? I'm not finding it by flipping through my volumes and I can't be bothered to do a proper search though.)
Covering barely over 2 chapters, this episode covers the least manga material thus far. And with this week's commentary done, onto the update!
There's probably no need for me to tell you this, but I'll say so anyway, Ryoko Asakura was indeed inside the classroom.
朝倉 Asakura: Surprised it’s me?
キョン Kyon: Ah. ... No, I’m not.
朝倉 Asakura: Ah, I’m surprised.
キョン Kyon: ... What is it?
朝倉 Asakura: I’d like to ask you something. ... What are your thoughts on Nagato-san?
キョン Kyon: My thoughts...?
朝倉 Asakura: There’s a saying among people that “It’s better to regret something you did than to regret something you didn’t do.” What are your thoughts on that?
The conversation is exactly the same as last time so far. To make sure I keep it that way, I make sure to retrace my words carefully.
キョン Kyon: ... My thoughts, huh? The way you’re asking I’m sure you already have your own answer, right?
朝倉 Asakura: Of course! In a situation where you know maintaining the status quo will only allow things to get worse, it’s only natural to want to try something to change the situation, right?
キョン Kyon: ... What are you trying to say, Asakura?
朝倉 Asakura: Well...
朝倉 Asakura: What do you think of our class exhibit?
... Heh.
キョン Kyon: ... Ah, so that's it? You want to toss out this half assed survey presentation and replace it with something else, right?
朝倉 Asakura: ... How did you know that?
キョン Kyon: Just a hunch.
朝倉 Asakura: That saves me explaining then! Even if you just pass the word on to our other classmates, can you please help?
... Okay, what should I do?

キョン Kyon: Fine, I’ll help you.
朝倉 Asakura: Really!? Thank you! I’m so glad, with you on board I know it’ll go well.
キョン Kyon: Asakura. I don’t want to rain on your parade, but I’m not sure we can do much with just the two of us.
朝倉 Asakura: That’s not true. Having someone to help is a big step. I couldn’t do this all by myself.
キョン Kyon: I suppose so. And? What now?
朝倉 Asakura: First we go to see the festival executive committee. There’s a girl named Kimidori-san. We need permission to change the exhibit.
With that said, Asakura had already started going. Whether it's her or Haruhi, I'm always getting swept up in the wake of these schemes.
朝倉 Asakura: Hurry up, we’ll be in trouble if we don’t catch Kimidori-san before she leaves.
キョン Kyon: That’s true.
And the moment I started walking.
キョン Kyon: Nowah!?
The manga magazine I had stuffed in my shirt fell out and hit the floor with a thud. Crap, that isn’t good.
朝倉 Asakura: ... What’s that?
キョン Kyon: Ah, um... Who knows, hahaha.
朝倉 Asakura: ... You probably shouldn’t bring things like that to school.
キョン Kyon: A-ah, you’re right.
朝倉 Asakura: Come on, let’s hurry.
Whew... At least she didn’t get suspicious about why it was in there.
喜緑さん Kimidori-san: In that case, I’ll give you permission to change your exhibit.
That was quick.
And to make a long story short, things basically went the same as last time.
朝倉 Asakura: Well, let’s head back to the classroom and discuss our plans.
キョン Kyon: Sure.
And despite Asakura's motivation, we still have to go back to the classroom for this... Yare yare.
朝倉 Asakura: The arrangements are taken care of. Now we just have to figure out what we’ll do.
Just like before, she has no ideas.
キョン Kyon: ... Asakura, I never thought you were the kind of girl to go in without a plan.
朝倉 Asakura: It’s not my fault. It wasn’t until I saw you with Nagato-san that I even thought of changing our exhibit.
朝倉 Asakura: Got any good ideas? You had some good ones for the Literature Club, right?
キョン Kyon: Well...
I haven’t got much to work with without Haruhi here. But something to change the exhibit to, huh.

キョン Kyon: I'm not sure if it's useful at all, but how about this?
朝倉 Asakura: Hamlet...?
キョン Kyon: Yeah, an abridged edition, it's been simplified for performances at high schools.

朝倉 Asakura: Remember when I said I performed 200 surveys on my own?
キョン Kyon: Yeah, it left an impact on me.
朝倉 Asakura: One of the questions was "Name an author whose work you're interested in but haven't actually read"...
朝倉 Asakura: When I tallied the results, Shakespeare was by far the most common answer.
キョン Kyon: Shakespeare, eh?
朝倉 Asakura: The week before I did the survey, a movie about Shakespeare aired on TV, do you think that influenced the result?
High school students are so easily swayed these days. I'd like to say that people need more individuality, but I'd probably have given the same answer if I'd seen the movie.
朝倉 Asakura: It doesn't really matter, I guess. The important part is that we have the survey results saying that people are interested in Shakespeare. And we have a copy of Hamlet.
朝倉 Asakura: Therefore, going by the survey results, we should put on a production of Hamlet. Well? Makes sense, right?
It's a bit of a stretch, but sure. There's only one response I can give anyway.
キョン Kyon: ... Sounds good? A play is fine by me.
朝倉 Asakura: It's settled then.

At least we've gotten all of the anime, manga and novels in English? It's more than some franchises get. ... Well, technically not all the manga as there was the obscure 2003 adaptation which lasted one volume... Maybe you can expect that from me at some point too though?
